British Columbia Vanderbilt and Muir Adventure
The Vanderbilt and Muir Adventure
Did you ever wonder what the results would be if two giants in different fields pooled their resources and knowledge to create something unique. George Vanderbilt opened the Biltmore Estate on Christmas eve 1895. This 250 room architectural masterpiece remains the finest private residence ever constructed in North America. John Muir is America’s foremost naturalist and founder of our national park system. America was blessed by his foresight. If these individuals were to create an adventure for their friends and family to enjoy it would be the Chilko Experience. Architectural splendor on a pristine 5M acre wilderness tract is where it begins.

The Trip of a Lifetime – For All Ages.
So many of life’s best memories revolve around an event and the people we share it with. If one is fortunate this includes family and friends from multiple generations. The challenge of such a diverse group is giving everyone the activities they desire and in the quantity they want. An 18 year old’s interest will be very different from their grandfather’s. At Chilko we cover this division by offering a multitude of activities each day. These includes hiking, horse back riding, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, bear watching, swimming, paddle boarding, ATV backwoods trail riding, cruising on the 50 mile long Chilko lake or jet boating the world famous Chilko River. Special guest requests have included learning how to fall a tree like a lumber jack, shoot a rifle like Annie Oakley or throw at axe like a Viking warrior. Whatever daytime activity one chooses the evenings are the same for all. Roughing it at a $10M private estate with a chef prepared meal, an open bar and lots of hospitality. At the Chilko Experience we make sure our guests get the mix of Vanderbilt (luxury) and Muir (nature) they seek.”
A Chilko Experience includes fabulous food by John, our talented chef, does just that three times a day. You will delight in his boundless energy and creativity in the kitchen. Count on a hearty breakfast to start each morning. Lunch is around the table, on the deck at the main house or carefully packed for your adventure. Days end means cold tap beer in an icy schooner, wine or cocktails as the sun sets behind the breathtaking British Columbia mountains. Food is wholesome, healthy and delicious. The dinner bell rings at 7 and you’ll hear it from your log home. It means our world class chef, has prepared a feast with a delectable dessert to crown a satisfying day.
The Chilko Experience was not designed as a lodge but rather as a private estate for one man’s friends & family. This is why its architecture and attention to detail surprise all visitors. In 2015 it is featured on HGTV’s new series Carver Kings for design, decorating and location reasons. It has seven log and timber frame homes. Each home is thoughtfully place on 25 acres for privacy and natural vistas. The final result offers you luxurious creature comfort in a home with artful charm and privacy. Log and timber frame homes are the essence of natural living.
Some of the activities that you may choose to participate in while in British Columbia are strenuous and should not be undertaken if you have any health conditions which may put you at risk. You are strongly advised to consult your physician for a thorough medical check-up and clearance before attempting the mountain. If you are over 50 years old, talk to your doctor about doing a “stress EKG”. Should you require any medication whatsoever, you must provide your own and be able to administer it yourself.
